The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines one of the meanings of the state of suspense as “mental
uncertainty; anxiety.” Just the way any of us with old injuries or chronic illness can feel at any time
when we are in an environment that is unknown. These various conditions can make it difficult to feel
safe going anywhere where we don’t know the design, terrain, or expanse of an area.
The half-hour television series Suspense was one such program that liked to take its viewers into the past
their comfort zone. They didn’t have to be trodding out around the countryside or down a labyrinthine
medical building to feel queasy about where they might find a place to sit should one of those old injuries decide to act up. No siree. Viewers would be sitting all comfy and cozy with a cup of hot cocoa, sipped slowly, savored, and made to last for that’suspenseful’ half hour, maybe with some popcorn, and certainly curled into one’s favorite couch or easy chair to be frightened out of their wits back then, when America was far more innocent than it is today.
You knew you were safe there at home, at least for the six seasons that the series aired, while the likes of
Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and other perfectly suited scary-genre actors would give you a chill up your
spine. Hence, the hot cocoa and a blanket, just for effect.

Vidal, one would forget any aches and pains, being so intensely engrossed with eyes glued to the
