The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines one of the meanings of the state of suspense as “mental uncertainty; anxiety.” Just the way any of us with old injuries or chronic illness can feel at any time when we are in an environment that is unknown. These various conditions can make it difficult to feel safe going anywhere where we don’t know the design, terrain, or expanse of an area.

The half-hour television series, Suspense, was one such program that liked to take its viewers out past their comfort zone. They didn’t have to be trading out around the countryside, or down a labyrinthine medical building to feel queasy about where they might find a place to sit should one of those old injuries decide to act up. No siree. Viewers would be sitting all comfy and cozy with a cup of hot cocoa, sipped slowly and savored and made to last for that ‘suspenseful’ half hour maybe with some popcorn and certainly curled into one’s favorite couch or easy chair to be frightened out of their wits, back then when America was far more innocent than it is today.

You knew you were safe there at home, at least for 6 seasons that the series aired, while the likes of Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi and other perfectly suited scary genre actors would give you a chill up your spine. Hence, the hot cocoa and a blanket just for effect.

Based on the writings of Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allen Poe, Roald Dahl, and Gore Vidal, one would forget any aches and pains, being so intensely engrossed with eyes glued to the screen. Some say that the energy in the body goes where the eyes go, which may explain why when we’re walking down a hard, stark white marble corridor, or trying to get our 10,000 steps in out on the macadam or sidewalk we can really start to feel those aches and pains where there aren’t many eye-catching distractions, and wonder where we’re going to find a place to sit, and soon! These compact little scary vignettes were just the ticket to scoop us up and away from our mundane world. Being scared by the unknown in a safe environment somehow made the stresses of the day disappear. Kind of like finding that Quick-Seat Chair just at the moment you think you can’t make it any further.

Back then, there was no “on-demand” where anyone with a swollen ankle or sore hip could relax and binge watch all 6 seasons in a mere weekend, and thank goodness the TV Dinner by Swanson Inc. hadn’t been invented yet! Back then it was once a week to be astounded, in awe and scared out of your wits while being safe and secure on your sofa. And, thanks to modern technology and inventive minds coupled with modern manufacturing, Quick-Seat Chairs can be available just about anywhere, installing easily with the consummate skill of a magician. Quick-Seat Chairs will safely and securely suspend you from their easy to access place on the wall, not “Suspense” you, and that’s a good thing.
