Quick-Seat Chairs & The Walking Book Club.

Now, why didn’t I think of this back then when I was ‘wellness coordinating’ in the field. Goodness knows I’d thought of everything else including the walking Art Detectives Club. So then, how could I resist delving more into this topic. At Quick-Seat Chair we are concerned with, I guess you could call it, The Art of Accessibility, where we want to engage and find entertaining ways to make your respite fun and useful. We also want to see people out and about and enjoying life as much as possible where Quick-Seat Chairs can play an enormous part with such ideas as with “Walking Books Clubs.”

We know that the more who people know their environment is safe and has rest stops along the way, the more they are willing to engage in activities that combined with places to sit will want to get out and about more in healthy ways. Especially for those in assisted living environments who need to get up and walk around, what a fun way to get some exercise while exercising their minds and the fine art of conversation. Why not create a Walking Book Club with a few friends and get those books you’re reading finished at the same time.

Here’s how:

1. Begin by having a short meeting to designate the circuit which your club will walk along. Remember to take the size of the group into consideration with the width of the walking area. This is important so that no one has to look back to talk to anyone behind them. Also make sure the walking area is clear of debris, slippery carpets and so forth.

2. Once you decide on the pathway that you will walk whether inside or outside, choose places where you can all sit comfortably for discussion. Have a few places along the way and preferably places that are near interesting features. If for instance you have a bistro area where you can order beverages, that would be a lovely addition or if outside, near a garden or water feature.

3. Decide on how long you want the Walking Book Club to meet and how often.

4. Avoid carrying heavy handbags which can add impact to knees and shoulders.

5. Make sure everyone wears good walking shoes with no slip soles.

6. Now the fun part. Name your Walking Book Club with a catchy name. Decide on the format that your meetings will use. Will you have certain questions about the current book to keep members on track? Or will it be less formal?

7. Make sure that there are places to sit along the way. You never know when an old injury may crop up to necessitate the need to sit. If your residence or walking area doesn’t already have any Quick-Seat Chairs on the premises, why not let the administration know about it, or your physician or Head Nurse. These are the people who can help get things in place for you.  Quick-Seat Chairs make a fine addition and can fit in anywhere, be color coordinated to fit in with décor and are part of any sound ‘fall risk prevention program.’ Happy Trails, happy reading and happy walking.
