Quick-Seat Chairs: Something To Do While Waiting

When The Maltese Falcon was released in Hollywood in 1941 starring Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor along with a thrilling cast of characters, no one could have known that one of the lines spoken by Bogart’s character, Sam Spade, would become a catch phrase. Movie-goers also wouldn’t have guessed that in the last segment of the movie, which took place in Sam Spade’s small apartment, all of the main cast were holed up where director John Houston never bothered to ask himself where they were all going sit. Mary Astor’s character winds up scrunched up on a window seat. I guess it’s part of the film Noir look that John Houston was going for.
Mary Astor’s character shouldn’t have been given a seat. She should have been made to stand in a corner. After all, she’s the ‘bad guy,’ the murderer and swindler and the grifter who tries to con Sam Spade, who is too smart for her. In the final scene, he’s seen dialing the police to tell them to come and take her away. She’s pleading with him saying, “kiss me, Sam, kiss me.” But it’s to no avail. Sam isn’t going to be lured and persuaded, as he hangs up the phone, he leans in for the kiss and says to her, “It is something to do while waiting for the cops to come and take you away!” Classic film Noir
But what does this all have to do with Quick-Seat Chairs? A lot. Sometimes you’ll arrive at an appointment and all of the usual seats are taken. The seats that fit attractively into the area dimensions perfectly, but that fails when there are more people than spacial specs allotted for overflow. However, there is other space available on a temporary basis that can easily fold up like an old fashioned Murphy’s bed. Only easier.
So now that you’re safely ensconced on the Quick-Seat Chair, let’s talk about ‘something to do while waiting,’ especially one that doesn’t involve your mobile phone. Let’s hop into the way-back machine and take some advice from some of the top writers on self-care to alleviate the wait. New York Times Best Selling Author, Sarah Ban Breathnach always suggested keeping a few interesting things in your briefcase or handbag such as; articles that you’ve taken from magazines or newspapers that you’ve wanted to read; crossword puzzles; a small sketch pad and pencil; a few 3×5 cards to jot ideas for projects; small tube of scented hand cream and so on.
If you find yourself sitting and waiting for an appointment longer than 20 minutes, make sure that you stand up for a moment or two, then sit back down and change your sitting position from the last time. Never sit for any long period of time without getting up, rearranging your posture and position occasionally during long waits.
Avoid sitting with your knees crossed, particularly with one knee placed over top of the other knee which isn’t good for circulation. Instead, sit with your ankles crossed and a little bit outward from your body for comfort.
You’ll look and feel much less stressed if you are prepared for a wait, as time seems such a premium today and no one likes to feel as if they’re wasting it. Quick-Seat Chair is always proud that we can hold up our end of the bargain with ample seating area, ease of opening the sturdy seat and being there when and where we’re are needed.
