A Quick-Seat Chair Hollywood Series Story: Judy Garland

Back a million years ago when I was first starting out in the world of health care to become a recreational therapist, I found myself in a course that was taught by a woman who had started out in television and film way back in the golden era of television. She loved to illustrate various techniques through her experiences on the stage. One such story involves movie and stage legend, Judy Garland. Judy was one of America’s sweethearts and still is today, especially where The Wizard of Oz is concerned. I doubt that any of us have ever stopped loving Dorothy on her adventures to find the Emerald City. From her basket where she carried little Toto the dog, to following a very long and sometimes difficult path to travail, the infamous Yellow Brick Road.

Think about that movie and how long a trek that was for Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, The Tin Man and The Scarecrow. What is missing from the scene? You’ve got it! A place to sit. Not one place to sit along the way and not one Quick-Seat Chair. Wouldn’t it have looked spectacular to see beautiful green Quick-Seat Chairs at intervals? I digress, but I was trying to draw a parallel between how winding, and uninviting some medical facilities, airport corridors, military bases and manufacturing plants can be to traverse even for the hearty visitor, that could all be ever so much more inviting with a few Quick-Seat Chairs available.

Back to Judy Garland. One of the stories that sticks out the most in my mind was a secret known only to Hollywood insiders and that was that Judy Garland, who always looked lovely, confident and like she was made for the stage and the camera was, in fact, someone who loved the limelight but still suffered from “stage fright.” She suffered so much from it that they had to provide her with a means to deal with the awful stomach attacks she had while waiting for her cue to go out on stage. What a sad thing, indeed. Only the stage hands and producers knew this secret, and that is how our instructor knew about it.

If Quick-Seat Chairs had been invented then, and been placed on either side of the stage, one for her entrance, and one for her exit, she may have had a little help for those difficult times. Just being able to sit down, do a little slow breathing, and letting the Quick-Seat Chair hold her up so she could relax her body, could have helped make a tremendous difference as it has been shown to do for so many people today waiting, endlessly waiting in emergency rooms sometimes filled to capacity. A little chair goes a long way to help reduce the added stress of waiting during an emergency or a long haul. If Quick-Seat  Chairs had starred in The Wizard of Oz along side Judy Garland and been waiting for her in the rafters, her stage and film life could have been so much more easy. Just think of how much more easier it can be at the emergency room, the rehab physical therapy room and all those places where you just wished that you could sit down for a minute. For all the places across the nation that offer the respite of a Quick-Seat Chair, people have let us know about the benefit.
