Nero Wolfe and Quick-Seat Chair Solves The Case

If Quick-Seat Chairs could talk, they would have some great stories to tell.  As a fan of Nero Wolfe author, Rex Stout, and having written a couple of Nero Wolfe stories myself, I can think of one story in particular where Quick-Seat Chairs could really tell a story. So I’ll tell you exactly what the gourmand and great detective did on one particular occasion when there were going to be more suspects, police, G-Men, and his own operatives in the office of his elaborate Brownstone, than there were chairs. Tensions were high as plans were laid to corner the villain. Each suspect had to be placed specifically for Wolfe to pull the whole thing off. Wolfe called on his right-hand man, Archie Goodwin, who ordered up several Quick-Seat Chairs to accommodate the guests. Remember, this is a fun fictional depiction of how, in reality, Quick-Seat Chairs do save the day and not to mention, your feet, on many occasions.

Here’s how it went down. It’s no secret or surprise that Nero Wolfe liked big cozy and comfortable chairs. The rotund detective weighed quite a bit, more than a quarter of a ton. I’m quoting his right-hand man, Archie Goodwin. His office was decorated with a number of large overstuffed chairs, but that was not going to suffice on this particular occasion. He needed 5 more chairs for the office to accommodate the assorted guests when revealing the “whodunit.” And, he would need another for the secret observation nook where his clients could privately view and hear what was going on with their case. In this situation a nice business woman who was about to discover how Nero Wolfe was going to prove that the FBI was innocent, and that her own secretary was guilty of a murder.

The Quick-Seat Chairs all arrived in their beautiful coffee colored brown. Wolfe was happy that they would look good as well as be silent when they opened and closed. Unexpected noise during the reveal of the villain is never welcome or appreciated. Wolfe’s operatives, Saul Panzer, Fred Derkin, Orrie Cather and Lon Cohen of The Gazette, who always reported about Wolfe’s exploits, got the Quick-Seat Chairs installed easily around the room. Wolfe tested one out, sitting on it. It held up like a charm, winning the Nero Wolfe Award.

His client arrived, and was shown into the secret observation nook, where she settled in and onto the Quick-Seat Chair. She was given instructions, by Archie,  not to make a single solitary sound to give herself away, as he also held his index finger up to his lips before dashing out of the room, closing the curtain and joining Wolfe and the others to get ready for the final reveal. He, Saul, Orrie, Fred and Lon took to the Quick-Seat Chairs, arranged strategically around the large office and, one by one, the suspects, police and G-Men arrived. No Quick-Seat Chair made a sound when any of Wolfe’s men had to get up to offer evidence, or when they sat back down. And so it on goes on that fateful day that Wolfe out-smarted the New York City police, and the FBI, and caught the villain. Sadly it was the secretary that Archie wanted to ask out on a date. As the best laid plans of mice and men, you can rest assured, though, that if a Quick-Seat Chair is part of your plan, your plan will not fail. Not with Quick-Seat Chair at your side or underneath you.
